Dr. Lorraine Dyke Vice President, Finance & Administration, Carleton University
Dr. Lorraine Dyke is a Professor of Management and Strategy in the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University. Over Dr. Dyke’s 36-year career at Carleton, she has led key offices and initiatives within both the academic and administrative areas of the institution and has been instrumental in shaping the strategic direction of the university.
Her most recent assignment was as the Vice-President (Finance and Administration) from April 1, 2022 to Aug. 31, 2024. At that time, she stepped back to take a much-deserved leave from the university. As Vice-President, Lorraine served as Carleton’s chief financial and administrative officer. The units in her portfolio included Financial Services, Human Resources, Facilities Management and Planning, ITS and Campus Safety Services, amongst others, that together have an immense impact on the daily operations and continued success of the university.
Prior to being named Vice-President, Lorraine served as Carleton’s inaugural Deputy Provost (Academic Operations and Planning). In this role, her responsibilities included strategic planning, budgeting, academic labour relations, faculty affairs and oversight of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning and the Centre for Community Engagement. Before taking on this role, she served as the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic) for two years where she was responsible for implementing strategic initiatives, operational academic planning, academic quality assurance, and curriculum development.
She also previously served as Associate Dean for Professional Graduate Programs in the Sprott School of Business. In this role, she was responsible for both Sprott’s domestic and international MBA programs – offered in Asia and South America – plus the launch of the school’s Master of Accounting degree. She is the founder and former Director of the Centre for Research and Education on Women and Work (CREWW), and a member of many university committees.
Dr. Dyke holds an MBA and PhD in Management from Queen’s University, and a BA (Honours) in English Literature from the University of Ottawa. She has spoken and published extensively on the changing dynamics of the workforce and diversity issues. Major monographs include a guide to managing diversity in law firms, a cross-cultural study of attitudes towards women in management, and large studies in the federal public service, the high-tech sector and policing. Dr. Dyke is also the recipient of six Best Paper Awards for her research. Her consulting experience includes work with some of Canada’s largest public- and private-sector organizations, including a major executive training initiative on diversity, a custom leadership program for a federal agency and various projects on workplace climate issues.
In 2014, Dr. Dyke was the recipient of a Leading Women Building Communities Award from the Government of Ontario. Dr. Dyke has also been awarded a Carleton Graduate Mentoring Award and the Graduate Students’ Association Excellence Award in Graduate Teaching at Carleton University. She has been nominated by Carleton alumnae for a Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Person’s Case, as a YMCA-YWCA Woman of Distinction and for a Capital Educators’ Award.
