Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a formal agreement between a student (apprentice) and an employer, especially in the skilled trades. The apprentice works under the direction of a certified journeyperson and is registered provincially by their province or territory. Typically, apprenticeships are 80% in the workplace with the rest done in class, and take anywhere from 2-5 years to finish.

Things to Consider

Bolstering Productivity

  • Consider longer work terms for apprentices: they become more productive as they develop their technical skills over time. Apprentices nearing the end of their apprenticeship can be as almost as productive as a certified journeyperson. This results in quality workers, reduced mistakes, and greater productivity.

Building a Skilled Talent Pipeline

  • Apprenticeships are effective ways to attract and retain high-quality talent and firms can receive a high return on their training investment by recruiting apprentices as full-time workers after they’re done.

Workforce Management Benefits

  • Apprentices nearing the end of their training are comparable to full-time workers and can work more independently. This can help companies address labor market shortages.

Benefits & Transferable Knowledge and Skills

  • Opportunity to connect theory and practice.

One thing I think is missing is the connecting the learning to the workplace and the workplace learning back to the academic study. So, that strong connection between like learning in an academic setting and applying it in the real world and just making more sense of the learning and connecting it with the real world. So, for me that's the biggest benefit of WIL.
