Service Learning
Service learning, also known as community service learning, is a type of WIL that connects classroom instruction with meaningful community service, focused on engaging students directly in practical projects that strengthen their communities. Service learning differs from volunteering because it typically features a minimum hour requirement and a mandatory reflection piece.
Things to Consider
Bolstering Productivity
- WIL students can help to alleviate employee workload and tackle projects that the company may have not been able to prioritize. This helps increase productivity. Work that students accomplish during a placement tends to have a lasting impact on the organization and the community it serves.
- Consider providing students with the autonomy to make key decisions and develop creative solutions. Another way to motivate students is having them work in groups to come up with unique ideas.
- The true benefits of student outputs may only be realized in the long term.
Corporate Social Responsibility
- Maintaining strong, clear communication and collaboration between the schools, organizations and the community is essential to service learning. The interdependence of the three encourages learning and social change and can help organizations build strong relationships with their community.
