John a fondé D2L en 1999, à l'âge de vingt-deux ans, alors qu'il était étudiant à l'Université de Waterloo. Il est fermement convaincu que l'apprentissage est le fondement sur lequel repose tout progrès et toute réussite.
Il est membre du Conseil canadien des affaires, membre du conseil d'administration de la Table ronde des affaires + de l’enseignement supérieur, membre du Industry Strategy Council au Canada, président de la Digital Economic Strategy Table au Canada, a siégé au conseil d'administration du Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada, est l'ancien président du conseil d'administration de Communitech et est membre du conseil d'administration de l'École nationale de ballet du Canada.
John a reçu la Croix du service méritoire, le prix EY Entrepreneur of the Year (Ontario for Software and Technology), la Young Alumni Achievement Medal de l'Université de Waterloo et le prix Intrepid Entrepreneur of the Year du Waterloo Region Hall of Fame.
John a obtenu de l'Université de Waterloo un B.A.Sc. en ingénierie de conception de systèmes, avec mention très bien et une option en sciences de la gestion.
