No ordinary school of medicine

Medical students at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) take part in a rare community focused mandatory professional practice. NOSM serves as the faculty of medicine for Lakehead University and Laurentian University and uses an innovative model of community-engaged medical education and research.

Northern Ontario’s unique cultural makeup of Indigenous, Anglophone and Francophone communities is a central piece of community-integrated learning. NOSM fosters a positive learning environment through integrating the community in the learning experience of each student. NOSM learners gain relevant clinical experience under the guidance of health professionals in community hospitals, clinics, and family practices. The School brings together over 70 community partners.

Communities play a vital role in welcoming and supporting students distributed across the North. In return, learners develop a better understanding of living and working in a Northern Ontario community. Since the School’s inception in 2005, 465 MDs have graduated from NOSM.
